Borrowing a dream to True: a journey through some of my favorite spots in Milan and a refreshing day trip to Como.
Let’s wander together.
FIRST STOP: MILAN
Milan is where I come from. Many itineraries skip this city, but if you have time, here’s a walk through the city balancing history, food, and culture.
1. Duomo Terraces: The City at Your Feet
A trip to Milan always starts with the Duomo and its square. You can climb 251 steps or take the elevator to reach the terraces, the world’s largest walkable Gothic roof. From above, the views of Milan and its iconic Madonnina statue are breathtaking.
2. Museo del Novecento: Amazing View of the Square and the Duomo
Whether you’re an art lover or not, the Museo del Novecento, located right by the Duomo, is worth a visit. Tickets are inexpensive, and you’ll find works by Lucio Fontana and other Italian modern artists. Bonus: the museum offers stunning views of the Duomo with little to no crowd.
3. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II: Good luck Traditions
Italy’s shopping malls are something else — and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is an architectural marvel. Linking Piazza del Duomo to La Scala, it’s famous for a quirky ritual: visitors spin three times on the bull’s mosaic for good luck. Don’t miss it — it’s a fun Milanese tradition!
4. Luini’s Panzerotti: Iconic Street Food Near the Duomo
No Milan visit is complete without Luini’s panzerotti, my absolute favorite. This small historic eatery near the Duomo serves classic tomato and mozzarella panzerotti, plus sweet and savory options. Expect a queue — especially at lunch — but it’s fast, affordable, and unforgettable.
5. Piazza della Scala and Teatro alla Scala
Adjacent to the Galleria, Piazza della Scala features the Teatro alla Scala opera house and a monument to Leonardo da Vinci. Whether you’re a fan of opera or just admire Italian culture, this square is a beautiful slice of Milanese life.
6. American Coffee, Italian Style: Starbucks a modo nostro
Get a coffe at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Milan. This is beyond the typical Starbucks. Located in the historic turn-of-the-century Palazzo Delle Poste building on Piazza Cordusio, this Starbucks Reserve Roastery is the culmination of a dream.
7. Castello Sforzesco, Parco Sempione, and Arco della Pace
Take a leisurely stroll through Castello Sforzesco, enjoy the greenery of Parco Sempione, and see the Arco della Pace. Stop in one of the many bars around Arco della Pace to have a traditional aperitivo: I reccomend a Spritz and some bites.
8. Navigli District for a night drink
If you have energy left, the Navigli district is perfect for an evening drink. Its unique atmosphere, especially in the late afternoon and evening, offers picturesque canals, great food/drinks, boutiques, art, and a lively, historic vibe that blends Milan’s past with its modern, trendy scene.
BONUS. A giant Middle finger Sculpture: Provocative Art in Piazza Affari
A little off the usual tourist path, Piazza Affari is home to Maurizio Cattelan’s provocative L.O.V.E. sculpture — a 36-foot Carrara marble middle finger. Perfect for a photo for your haters. For a truly Milanese experience, why not reach it on one of the iconic Milanese trams?
SECOND STOP: COMO – George, are you home?
George Clooney owns a 100 milion dollars villa in Lake Como, fancy a visit?
Just a short, inexpensive train ride from Milan, Como offers stunning mountains, sparkling lake views, and historic villas. It’s the perfect contrast to Milan’s city pace, providing a relaxing escape where nature, water, and elegance merge beautifully.
How about a day trip? That can include:
- Renting a boat or pedalò
- Swimming in the lake
- Exploring charming lakeside towns
Alternatively, Lugano is a wonderful option — lake views, mountains, good food, and shopping, all just a train ride away from Milan. It’s also a simple way to cross Switzerland off your bucket list.
